    The Great American Supervillain

I have been thinking about this for a couple of years now, and I'd love to get feedback from folks here. If Dr. Mabuse is the German supervillain, Fantomas is the French supervillain, and Fu Manchu is the British supervillain, then who would fill that role for America?

If we're talking archetypal evil villains that have become the pattern in which many others follow, and whose authors and storytelling are distinctly American.....

I cast my vote for Lex Luthor. No other series or medium has had the lasting impression of the Superman comic books, and no other villain has been imitated and reinvented so many times.

My only questions would be, does Luthor capture the popular imagination the way the others have? Can he stand on his own independently of Superman? Does he really have the staying power the others have? I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, just thinking through your nomination.

I don't think I'm smart enough for this conversation, but I'll say "Lex Luthor"! Cuz I gotta celebrate those moments when Mindspike and I agree on something!! Woohoo!!!
