What Has Your Attention From E3?

Post  Paeter on June 16th 2015, 6:11 pm

This year strikes me as a much more exciting year than the last one. (Mainly because of Fallout 4) Anyone have some reactions to anything they want to share?

I'm not much of a gamer these days... but in response to Paeter's comments about the Pentagrams in Doom...

... I've often found our culture's portrayal of evil symbols as laughable.
For instance, an upside down cross is supposed to represent the devil (because upside down objects are the opposite of what they represent!), but in church history, such a cross represents the Apostle Peter - who was said to have been crucified upside down at his request because he wasn't worthy the die the same way Christ did.

(Once I was so obnoxious I would go up to people who had an inverted cross and say, "Cool... Saint Peter! I'm a Christian too!")

As for the Pentagram - It (along with the upright pentagram) once represented the five senses (and having control over them... so they will not lead a person to sin) and the five wounds of Christ.
From what I understand, the position of the symbol merely represented which senses or wounds were being emphasized.
(See "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight").

It wasn't until somewhere around the 19th century that the symbol was proposed to have evil imagery when positioned upside-down.

So... I like to think a Pentagram would have been interpreted as emphasizing the wounds on Christ's feet.

Ok... I know... I'm overthinking this!

I don't believe you are overthinking it... we should take back our symbols.
I've always been a fan of Arthurian tales, and Gawain is my personal favorite...but if I went around with a pentagram around my neck people would freak out. (I do get a good chuckle at an atheist buddy's expense when he displays his pentagram, though)

However... I think we also have to accept that the meaning of symbols can change. After all, a swastika isn't generally seen as a symbol of luck anymore.
That is why I say we should take them back; if symbols evolve over time then nothing says we can't shift them back into our sphere of influence.

Anyone ever read "Captain Swastika" from the John Varley "Superheroes" collection of stories? A guy was granted superman-like powers by an ancient "Shazam-Wizard" type character who has been hybernating while the Swastika was put to evil use. The guy could use the powers, but only with a giant swastika on his chest at the same time. Great little short story that had me laughing out loud.
