Somewhere In Time (And Geek Genre Romance)

Post  Paeter on October 12th 2016, 9:19 am

After someone recently expressed uncertainty about whether or not romantic geek fiction had an audience here, I thought I'd post the trailer for the first geek fiction romance movie that I ever watched. Of course it would take Christopher Reeve to make me curious enough. But after watching this I became open to a whole new world of geek movie possibilities that has been immensely rewarding. (And oddly many of them revolve around time travel also.)

You have to look past the old style of the trailer (and the movie looks MUCH better on DVD), but I'd highly recommend this to Christopher Reeve Superman fans who have never tried geek romance fiction before. (The trailer describes it as haunting and oof! That's a good word to describe how this movie left me.) And if "romance" carries baggage for you, just think of it as a geek-genre "drama".

Anyone else see this one? What did you think? (No Spoilers please!)

    I haven't seen that one.

What about "Ever After", the Drew Barrymore more based on the Cinderella fairy tale? That's one I kinda like, even though I've not been a big fan of Barrymore.

Usually, I like stories that have a romance element in them, as opposed to romantic stories. You know, boy meets girl while both are trying to flee from the zombie apocalypse, that might work for me.

    Interesting.
Looks like they're making decent use of time travel, and not just as a device to get a modern character into a period setting.

My wife loves "Ever After"! And yeah, that totally counts!

And let me know if you find that Zombie Apocalypse romance!

Yeah, it's been awhile, but it's definitely a different take on time travel. A sort of "mind over matter" approach that, while ridiculous to me when I pick at it, somehow worked for me in the movie. Maybe because there was intense effort involved and they played that up, as well as sticking to the "rules" of time travel in the story. Interesting stuff!

    Try this
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1588173/

This was actually the first film that made me realise that a movie that combined romance with speculative or action-based elements could work as an ideal 'date night' movie.

Note, that the trailer gives away perhaps slightly more than I would consider ideal.
