Honestly, my main reaction after watching that trailer is, "Wow, Tom Cruise makes the same movie, again." It simply looks like another spin on the Mission Impossible and Jack Reacher type of action movie he's become known for in recent years.

Yeah I was thinking the plane crash scene reminded me of the Mission Impossible movies

The studio pulled up to Tom Cruise's house with a dump truck full of cash and asked if he's be in the movie. He asked them to throw in a little Scientology propaganda into the script and now we have this movie.

Wait, you're joking, right? Is there REALLY gonna be a shout out to Hubbard's religion in this flick?

Assuming that's not the case, I don't have any strong feelings. The female Mummy is a nice mix up of the formula, I like the scale of power the mummy seems to have, and Tom Cruise, for my tastes, almost never makes less then "solid" movies, even if they are rarely or never "great".

So I'm open and interested, but not expecting more than a good yet forgettable experience.

I had heard that Universal was planning on making a Avengers type Cinematic universe with their monsters (the original universal monster were already kind of like that) I don't know if that was a rumor, an abandoned idea, or if this is the first movie in that universe

I could be down for that, but I don't think it would be as popular as the Marvel movies right out of the gate, so I think they would have to stick it out for a bit to build a following. But I did always love the Universal monster movies, so I'm intrigued.

I heard that way back when Dracula Untold came out, which was supposed to be the first movie in that shared universe. But I think it under performed for them, so they may still include it in continuity but instead make Tom Cruise, (ahem) I mean The Mummy, the "Iron Man" rallying point. (Bit of Trivia, Tom Cruise was supposedly considered strongly for Tony Stark).

I love a monster shared universe idea. BIIIIIG problem though for a monster fan like me. This means that the monster movies will likely all be PG-13, to further draw in crowds.(Cuz let's be real. Shared universes in movies these days are a LOT less about multilayered storytelling and a whole lot more about making money from the dude who says "Hey, I remember that guy! Let's go to that movie!") That sucks big time. For some of these monsters I find gore to be an important part of the freak factor. On top of that, I can probably say goodbye to my dream of seeing Dracula go up against The Thing. You can't do that monster right without some horrific rated R gore effects.

There's a nod to Scientology in nearly every Tom Cruise movie. Edge of Tomorrow had the most blatant material with the repeated lives, memories, and emotional trauma.

I remember Vanilla Sky being very Scientology-ish.

I have forgotten most of what I knew about the beliefs of scientologists, so didn't pick up on it in Edge of Tommorow.

Yeah, I've never looked into it much at all, since L. Ron Hubbard didn't, y'know... rise from the dead! (Call me when he does that and I'll read his book.)

Kinda glad I didn't know. Might have added a layer I didn't enjoy to that experience, which is otherwise among my favorite Tom Cruise movies. (Take that praise how you will.)

It's from a song someone showed me on YouTube. It says,
"I'm sorry, my Chinese isn't good,
    I'm sorry, I'm sorry,
I just want to be your friend!"

    如果你會看懂繁體字,你就會看懂這個句子!

Given that I mostly share your ambivalence toward this movie.... How do you think making the Mummy female will "mix up the formula"? It still looks to me like an interchangeable all-powerful monster. It still looks like basically the same Mummy that Arnold Vosloo played.

I'm assuming/hoping that there's SOMETHING more to the change than just an attempt at sex appeal. Something related to her position in life (as opposed to being a pharoah, which I don't think was a female position of authority) that is relevant to her motives/backstory. Was she the wife of an ancient king?
