Your Favorite Geeky Youtube Channels Or Podcasts

Post  Paeter on May 10th 2017, 11:08 am

I'm thinking of doing a Summer Of Free video that spotlights podcast and Youtube channel picks from our community. I'm not especially interested in Christian Geek content, just the geek-related youtube channels you like.

I don't listen to any geek podcast with any regularity, but for me and youtube I'd probably say Easy Allies, Kinda Funny (before Colin Moriarty left), Jim Sterling, Game Informer (for the weekly video podcast), Matt Chat and The Dice Tower. (Two of those channels actually do prominently feature Christians, but none are aimed at Christians.)

Anyone have some favorite geek-related channels or podcasts to add?

Well, I USED to like SBU, but Paeter "No Fun" Frandsen's view of GoTG2 has turned me off from that.

    Okay, serious, now...
let's see... I usually stick to Christian geeky stuff.
    http://savingthegame.podbean.com/
    http://thescifichristian.com/category/podcast/
    https://welcometolevelseven.com/ -not a Christian-specific podcast
http://comicbooktimemachine.com/ -Christian hosts, but not a "Christian podcast"
https://philvischer.com/category/the-phil-vischer-podcast/ -geeky because Phil is geeky, not by topic, usually
    http://www.gamestoreprophets.com/?p=930
https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/dq4k4-4a414/The+Movie+Proposal -not all are geeky, but geeky movies are prominent
If you are a history geek like I am, then
    http://www.dancarlin.com/hardcore-history-series/

And the CGC 4 of course.

If you want geek related Youtubing... then might I suggest-
    https://www.youtube.com/user/TheLutheranSatire
https://www.youtube.com/user/HISHEdotcom -pretty clean, and HILARIOUS, but can sort of ruin movies for you

I don't know if it counts, but the only YouTube I watch with any kind of regularity is the Abandoned videos by Bright Sun Gaming. One part urban exploration, one part documentary.

Lol of the morning! Thank you for that! And don't worry, I'm sure I'll hear from all the grumpy haters about Justice League when it releases to my great joy.

Somehow I forgot that http://retrorewindpodcast.com/ wasn't part of the CGC 4. definite geeky, definite recommendation.
    (Sorry Francisco)

As to Justice League... I didn't hate Batman V Superman like a lot of people did, and I'm a Marvel guy. (or maybe because I'm a Marvel guy) The How it should have Ended video did bring some of its issues painfully to light, however.
I'm trying to convince my wife to see Wonder Woman, so I can have a more feminist mindset (although I'm sure my wife doesn't want to see hairy armpits any more than I do). But if not, then JL is probably the next DCU movie I'll see, and I'm ...well, not "excited" but "curious" how it will go.

Here are the geeky YouTube channels I subscribe to (besides CGC and SBU).

    FizzFop1: https://www.youtube.com/user/FizzFop1
He can go a while between updates, but it's probably because he's been putting a lot of effort into his more recent videos. This guy has a series called "Lost Hero of the Golden Age" where he covers the history of a different Golden Age comic book superhero that most people likely don't know about. He's done videos about the Black Bat, the original DareDevil, the Phantom Lady, etc. There are also a couple about groups of heroes like the Archie Comics heroes, "10 Superheroes Before Superman," and such and such. Sometimes, he even has an actor dressed like the hero acting things out under his voiceover.

    NerdSync: https://www.youtube.com/user/NerdSyncProductions
Lots of videos about comics and other forms of media that would interest comics fans. They cover history, philosophy, art, and science as it relates to comics, and there are also some reviews and Q&A's. I personally enjoy the videos about the lawsuits that have impacted different comics companies. The new YouTube algorithm might be putting these guys out of business soon, unfortunately.

    VariantComics: https://www.youtube.com/user/VariantComics
Similar to NerdSync. I've only just found them, so I'm not well-versed on all they do, but I like what I've seen so far. Aside from lists and reviews, they also have character history videos, "Who would win?" videos, and videos about alternate versions of comics characters.

    ComicsExplained: https://www.youtube.com/user/fluidicbeats
Another one I just found, but I hope to dive in soon. As the name implies, this guy explains different comic book storylines, including recent ones like DC Rebirth, which is very useful for someone like me who can't get to a comic book shop without taking a day-long flight. He also has a series where he tells you how to kill (or "un-alive") different superheroes and villains. That's...kind of creepy, but I guess vulnerabilities are an important part of superhero stories, so I can see the appeal of covering such a subject.

    Strangers and Aliens: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsJh3UGnEPuI5iQ4bUabrdg
You know about this one, right? It's the guys from the podcast making funny videos. They don't update that often, but they did just put a new "David Dialogue" video up last week. That's where Evan David relates geeky stuff like Superman and the Lorax movie to Biblical truths. "Weak Connections" has Ben Avery (in an 80's style grainy video filter) connecting geeky movies to Biblical stuff (weakly). And there are a couple cartoons they've made, too. This is the only channel I know of on my little list so far that has any Christian involvement.

The only geeky podcasts I listen to are Spirit Blade and Strangers and Aliens. Unless movie review podcasts count...?

Sure they do! Assuming they review a decent number of geek genre movies.

Some to consider (all from the same network):

    The Secret Fire Podcast: http://gctnetwork.com/category/secret-fire-podcast/
    Finding Christ in Cinema: http://fcc.gctnetwork.com/
    The Theonauts: http://gctnetwork.com/category/theonauts/

One of my favourite geeky podcasts is Lasers, Dragons and Keyboards.
The three hosts are all Christians, and so are most of their guests, but they definitely don't promote themselves as a "christian podcast."
They speak to big and small names in the Christian Speculative Fiction world. Think the kinds of authors that I usually promote in my monthly news bulletin videos.

They've had people like Tosca Lee and Patrick W. Carr. They'd like to get Ted Dekker some day (maybe they'll catch him at Realm Makers)

For each guest, they'll have a "reader" episode, where they talk about fun geeky stuff, and then a "writer" episode, where they dig into the nitty-gritty of the author's writing style.
