    Bush Fire Nearby

Post  AdamCollings on January 22nd 2018, 2:20 am

    So this is happening

So This is basically up the road a bit from our place. So far There's been nothing said by Police about our area, but we're making plans.
Biggest risk is probably smoke inhalation.

We're not panicking, but we're definitely considering our options.

We didn't have to evacuate. They re-opened the road (but then closed it again later). We kept the doors and windows closed to keep out any smoke. (hard because it was hot).

Before we went to bed, we could see the red glow from the fires. During the afternoon we could see helicopters water-bombing. They had to fly over our house to get to the river.
Police believe the fire was deliberately lit by some 15-year-old kids.

The biggest challenge ended up being the management of the kids' anxiety. Linda and I were quite calm, and just being prepared. Once we packed bags, though, they just wanted to leave. Hard to convince them to go to bed after that.

Wow. Reminds me of a conversation I recently had with a friend in Florida (Ryan Emenecker, who did the graphic design for the SB trilogy). They hunkered down through their first hurricane last year. Didn't evacuate because they had every reason to think they'd be fine based on reports, and they were. But they spent a whole night awake in the master bedroom closet, power out, listening to the storm and wondering when their roof was going to come crashing down. Intense! They have a girl about the same age as yours, too.

So are you guys in the clear completely now? Fires out?

Wow, that sounds intense and pretty scary. By the time we went to bed we were pretty confident that there was no risk to us.
