    Website Point Size

Post  Paeter on July 27th 2011, 3:17 pm

Just curious about the readability of the main website. Got an e-mail from someone this week mentioning the point size was small and tough to read. I went in and increased the size and would love to get some feedback. Too big? Not big enough?

Any feedback you have would be helpful. Thanks!

    too big IMHO

I think it's the double column thing that's weird...
Also your links at the top are unclear... what does this link actually do?

    Just my opinion...

As a rule, light type on a dark background is harder to see than dark type on a light background, this may be what was being commented on. Increasing the type size will alleviate this somewhat.

My opinion: the size of your type should be a function of the reader's interface rather than embedded in the code. Most PC browsers allow the user to adjust the "zoom" by pressing Ctrl+ or Ctrl-. This doesn't work as well for your site because of the Flash interface and layout. To me, right now, your serif text looks just about the right size, and your sans serif text appears to be oversized. Your leading (line spacing) in general appears too wide, and the paragraph/heading breaks in particular appear much too wide.

I also think the twin column format looks odd, but that's probably because it only takes up half of my laptop screen - it doesn't look quite as odd when viewed in a window. Wider columns would let more type into the viewing area, though, and that would be nice - reduce that "large print" feeling. Columnated text really needs to be fully justified instead of left justified to increase the visual appeal.

I've had problems with your Flash interface before, depending on which browser I'm using. If I'm on either my Android or Apple mobile devices, your Flash objects are completely inaccessible - which means I can neither navigate your site on my tablet, nor play your streaming ads. The HTML navbar in the footer is so subtle that it's hard to find and use. Simply changing the color of the links for greater contrast with the background would make this element stand out more.

These are just some thoughts. Web site design is like any other visual design - more art than science.

Thanks. I agree. I'm going to try and find a happy medium from what it was and what it is now.

Are you talking about the flash links that appear in the navigation at the top of every page?

Thanks, Mindspike. A lot of that was Kryptonese to me. (I'm both tech stupid and "doc-talk" illiterate.) But I'll see what I can translate and put to use.

The feedback on browser problems is very useful. I'll pass that on to my tech guy.

Looks like two-strikes for the two-column format. I'll see about changing that when we re-work the site. (Which unfortunately may be quite awhile for lack of funds.)

    Thanks for the feedback!

I'll agree with both these guys. I think it's a bit too big now. If they have trouble seeing it, they should use their browser's zoom tool (View | Zoom or CTRL + and CTRL -).

    One of many Kryptonites.

Okay, I just adjusted to a point size that was smaller than the changed version and bigger than the original. Any better?

I know I can't make it perfect for everybody, I'd just like the default to be decent so that as few people as possible need to use the zoom feature of their browser.

What do you guys think of the current point size?

I think it looks okay for the moment.
If I can offer some advice in non-Kryptonese....
...Use a single font throughout your site for a consistent experience.
...Use only the "default" size for text.
...To visually change the text, use header formatting instead of changing the font or size. Bold or italic is okay as well.
...Select "Justify" or "Fully Justified" for your text. You've probably got a button selection with lines align to the left, center, right, and all the way across. The last one is the one you want.

This practice will produce a more uniform reading experience across a greater variety of platforms, as well as increasing the flexibility of your page layout. It will also lend a more "magazine-like" look to your pages.

Thanks for the tips! Clearer, but still a bit alien. I think it's enough to make some good changes, though. I'll see what I can do.

    Thanks!

I still think the 2 even sized column thing is weird... it wouldn't be bad if maybe the left column was wider than the right column. But your site is so narrow that doing something like this would be weird.

And remember to use the golden ratio Wink

The font looks weird to me...

I don't remember having any issues with it to start with. I only noticed it get bigger when you changed it. Honestly it still looks a bit off to me. Just too large and bold. The text in the forums area is perfect for me. Good luck! One thing you never will do with any design is make everyone happy!!!!!
