    New Yamato

Post  cwrussll on July 8th 2010, 11:58 am

I was just wondering if any of the old school geeks had seen the trailer for the new live-action Star Cruiser Yamato yet.
I'va actually been waiting for this since the seventies.

Can't help you there. I'm guessing that anime of some kind?

It was an anime. It was a cartoon series release in the us as Starblazers.

It's a shame I'll have to wait so long for it to come to the United States.

As far as the wave motion gun; I'd rather be surprised. If I see it in the trailer I'll have nothing to look forward to in the movie. I watched the show in Japanese and English. I've seen the anime movies. There's no mystery in the storyline for me. All I have to look forward to is the effects and character acting.

Whatever happened to the Gatachman live action movie (or the Gatchaman movie period)? I saw a clip from it once in animation, a CGI version, and live action, but nothing else in the years since.

A live action Gatchman (Battle of the Planets) would rock. I remember hearing about it a while back. Maybe if Yamato does well...we can hope.

So long as the people who did the Transfomers movies don't get their hands on Voltron.

Didn't like Transformers, huh? I never got into the Voltrons, anime or CGI. I think I was still suffering from Shogun Warrior overload with all the transforming, giant robots that came out of the woodwork.

I saw the live action Tetsujin 28(Gigantor)and was VERY disappointed. There was so much potential that could have been used. For instance; you have a giant, weapon of mass destruction, robot in the control of a kid lacking parental guidance, that saw his grandfather gunned down in front of him- issues. Who's gonna tell the kid it's time for bed? What if he decides he's not gonna listen to 'grown ups' any more? How do you stop him? He's not on anyone's side but his own. The movie was a waste of celluloid (if we were still using film). The newer T28 CGI movie looked much better in the trailers. Fredd Ladd should never be allowed to touch another import as long as the sun rises in the East.

I liked Giant Robo better than Gigantor when I was finally exposed to it. Not the Johnny Sokko Giant Robot (which I watched faithfully after school), I mean the anime from the manga. The newer GR: Giant Robo was the best, very mysterious, with the other GRs in different countries.

LOL I use what I know. The Lone Ranger is harder to do than Greenuts- not as much source material as Green Lantern and the DC universe. Eventually I may end up doing a serious Ranger strip, but I don't want to catch trouble for myself or anyone else from Now Comics. and between you and me, *wink, wink* horseback illustrations are not easy for me to do- need to look at more reference for correct proportions. Greenuts isn't a cake walk to draw either though- Lucy Van Pelt is hard for me to get right for some reason. But again, I'm glad you like them.

Woot! Someone else on earth who remembers Battle of the Planets!! No one I've ever asked EVER remembers this show from when I was a kid. I used to watch this with my brother and HE doesn't even remember it. I've run it past some friends who into anime and they've never heard of it.

The cool boomerangs, the ship that would turn into a phoenix... man...some cool stuff. I'd like to see a remake of that.

I've never heard it called Gatchman, though. Seems like I saw it referred to as G-Force once somewhere.

I hate to tell ya guys, but BOTP, G-Force, and Eagle Riders were pale reflections of Gatchaman. Sandy Frank did disgusting things to it. Mind you, BOTP and Star Blazers were my favorite shows when they first aired (on channel 5 here in DC)- this was years after Marine Boy and Speed Racer. But when I finally saw the REAL show, Gatchaman, I was gobsmacked by how much had been tampered with. If you ever have the chance to see or buy the original in raw Japanese, subtitled, do so. The OVA movie was good too.

Gonna have to disagree with you there. I loved the original American ports that Frank did of this series. The original Gatchaman stuff was way too far out - I much preferred the Americanized versions of the show. Awesome gear, great character designs, kids level advetnures. I bought the new Gatchaman OVA as soon as it hit and was absolutely horrified by the voice acting, the animation, the music, the androgynous characters - pretty much the whole thing.

Gatchaman is for the hard-core Japanese anime purists - not me. I also preferred Robotech to Macross/Mospeada and Tranzor Z to Mazinger Z. So... make mine Battle of the Planets.

I have very mixed feelings about the new Nickelodeon Voltron Force, but I'm willing to give it a chance.

While it is tempting to write Nickelodeon off due the quality of .... pretty much everything on their network .... let us remember that they did produce Avatar: the Last Airbender. If you haven't seen this absolutely amazing show, make time to do so. Netflix is streaming all three seasons.

Don't mistake the mediocre "Last Airbender" movie as a representative sample of the cartoon. Avatar uses the same long-form storytelling now associated with most adult dramas and tells an epic story in animation that would be incredibly difficult/expensive to accomplish live.

This alone buys Nickelodeon a small measure of latitude.
