So do I need a webcam to do a "hangout"?

I think I have a webcam laying around somewhere, but I'm willing to test it out with you Paeter with just audio.

Has anyone considered an Adventure game? Think Monkey Island or Beneath a Steel Sky

I like this idea. We should probably start with a brainstorming session...throwing out all possibilities that come to mind with no filter for what's a good idea and what's not. I think this is best done in a dynamic setting like a video/voice conference vs. the forums. With the forums, it takes too long to type it out so you'll filter yourself. The point of these sessions is to have a "jam session" where the ideas start flowing. While your specific idea may or may not be necessarily good, but it may spark something in someone else's mind. You start feeding off each other.

I suggest we all come prepared with three ideas. What do y'all think about Saturday after the Spirit Blade chat? Say 7PM to whenever (8PM) MDT? You could even close with an invitation for everyone in the chat to participate in the hangout. Just throwing out a time and trying to get it rolling. Smile If I can find your gmail addresses on G+, I'll try to send you a calendar invitation which facilitates rescheduling a little better.

That would be awesome! I'm a huge fan of the old Sierra and Lucasfilms games
Man, I used to love those games. King's Quest, Police Quest, Loom... woot! Those were the days!

That sounds like a cool idea.

Also for brainstorming and organizing your random thoughts and throw-away ideas; I've found MindMeister to be invaluable. I've setup a preliminary mind map. If interested send me your email addy and I'll add you to the "shared" list.

Here's the dirt on Mind Meister:

Sounds interesting. I just tossed you a PM with my email address. I *would* say Google Wave would be a good tool to use since we all have gmail accounts now, but... it's not being developed any more, so I don't know how wise a choice that would be. I'll check out Mind Meister.

I'm glad my adventure game idea seems to ring out with everyone so far cheers

Sounds cool! I'm a "Maniac Mansion" fanboy myself.
I'm up for the hangout after the chat this Saturday. Whiteboy, I'll take you up pon the audio test. Why don't you e-mail me with a time? Weekday evenings after 7:30pm MST are good for me. Could maybe do something before the chat on Saturday, too.

My only hesitation on this style of game is that it will require a LOT more writing than an action game, and I'm not confident I have time to make that happen. What I WOULD be game for would be to invite another writer to write a story that I just help develop the framework for. But we can talk more along that line at the hangout.

Forgot to respond to this earlier. Thanks for the suggestion, but I'd like to keep this thing free, whatever it turns out to be. I think it will (a) keep us well clear of any potential legal mess and (b) result in more downloads and more people who will potentially connect with this community as a result.

But thanks for thinking of ways to support SBP! Much appreciated!

Not necessarily... it is possible that someone will see the app as free and totally skip it thinking it's junk.

But I understand where you're coming from.

I'm not sure what you're thinking of here. Is this because of wanting to use art from somewhere else? Couldn't this be avoided if we have our own artists? What else are concerns?

Maybe have a free version that only has the first level or two, and the full version is $0.99. I see it as a potential source of revenue as well.

Well, when a group of people all invest time and effort into something that starts to make money, especially if by some miracle it makes a lot of money, then thoughts can start spinning in heads about who deserves what. As much as we might all say that would never happen, the only way we can be sure is by signing some legal stuff in advance, which I'm not really interested in messing with for this project. Keeping it free means never having to even think about any of that.

Got a question... should this game be

3rd person or (think monkey island where you see the character)

essentially 1st person? (where you can't see the main character)

We all agree it should be 2d right?

should this story take place during before or after the events of spirit blade?

Well, to avoid dancing around spoilers for SB3, I'd prefer to do something that's before SB1. The rest I have no preference on.

I'm not a big fan of first person games so my vote is third person

I would think third-person or top-down or side-scroller would be better fit for a phone. And I agree 2D would be better.

What about Isaiah’s adventures before he founded the Underground Liberation?

Hmm. Y'know I just so happen to have an unfinished prequel story in the can featuring Isaiah, written by our own Winston Crutchfield. I have the rights to use and finish it however I want. Maybe it could be mined and/or adapted for the game? Winston might even still be able to give me his thoughts or outline for how the story would continue and end.

On a side note, I had to edit that one sentence. I almost posted:

"I just so happen to have an unfinished prequel story featuring Isaiah in the can."

Yeah, it's about Isaiah eating some smelly tacos and then having a really bad day.

No hinting on my end. (I'm not really passive aggressive, just aggressive aggressive.) But if you have some thoughts or anything you'd like to add to that story I'd love to see it! Could work great for a game!

Anyone who's posted here so far still interested in seeing this through? If so, based on what's been posted so far, what should our next move be?

The next step was going to be an online meeting with those of us interested. The meeting was going to be after the Spirit Blade chat meeting. Unfortunately, that was the night Paeter's internet connection crashed, and the meeting never really got rescheduled.

I would say that meeting would probably still need to be the next step.

My schedule changes all the time. Typically, Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday would be bad for me in the evenings.

Sorry! I've been busy finishing up my senior year of high-school basketball Basketball

Yea! I'm still really interested, And I guess the next step would be to get a design document together...

Here are a couple of questions we need answered first though:

Did we settle on having the game be a prequel to spirit blade and basing it around Isaiah?

What should the game be about? (My thoughts would be maybe Isaiah recruiting the members of the original Underground Liberation, by perhaps earning their trust and completing small quests, I don't know, it was just a thought drunken )

2D or 3D? (I'd actually support going 3D for this one, since I have a lot more exp with it than I do with 2D).

Does anybody else want to help? (I'm referring to the actual building of the game). I don't mind doing it on my own, as it is just as much a learning experience for me as anything else, and so consequentially might be delayed often while I go learn what I need to get over that particular hump. However if anyone else wants to help, I welcome them. Very Happy

What Game Engine should we use? I've had a good deal of exp with Unity3D, so if no one objects, I'd like to use that. (the basic version is free, and right now the basic editions of iOS and Android are free as well (would be $800 normally) so anyone who wants to help with the actual "Game-Building" phase, or just wants to take advantage of the deal, should pick those up before they go back off-sale (April 8th). Here's the link, just select unity basic and both free add-ons.

That said, Paeter mentioned here about trying to spruce up the website, what about doing a web based game instead, or just port the game to both?

I hope that wasn't too confusing, I am really exicted about the potential of this project. I'll try and find a good design doc and post it later.

I think using unity is a great idea.

    1) you said you have experience
    2) it's free ATM
    3) we can then port to android/iphone/web easily

Even though I am not familiar with it. I'd be willing to learn.

Also did we decide this would be an adventure game?
