    Comic book/graphic novels?

Post  tmorrill on January 13th 2013, 5:09 am

So, I wanna start getting into the whole graphic novel/comic book thing.

Does anyone have any good recommendations to start out with?

Find a comic book character/superhero you like and read an epic comicbook event with multiple tie-ins around that character. It's a lot of reading, but after that, you're "in".

For instance, I liked the Green Lantern movie, was curious about that character (which I had never heard of before) and dived into comics with DC's Blackest Night event including almost every tie-in.
I had only read a couple of comics here and there before that, hardly worth mentioning.

Wow, what a ride that was...!
    Hooked to comics ever since.

See, I would take a completely different approach to this. Instead of following a character, I would pick out a storyline that I'm interested in and read that. This way you get a complete story experience similar to reading a novel, and don't necessarily get sucked into buying the regular magazine.

If you want your story in a single volume I suggest:
    Watchmen
    Squadron Supreme
    The Dark Knight Returns
    Batman: Blind Justice
Batman: A Death in the Family
    Green Lantern: Baptism of Fire
    Green Lantern: Circle of Fire
    Marvel: The Infinity Gauntlet

I could go on and on.....

If you want a story spread out over multiple volumes, check out:

    Batman: Knightfall
    Batman: No Man's Land
    Superman: The Death of Superman
    Superman: Our Worlds at War
    Marvel: Annihilation

Again, I could go on and on and on........

Or you could subscribe to either Marvel or DC, both started "fresh" just recently with Marvel Now and The New 52. There wouldn't be much to catch up on, or just figure out if you don't read the previous issues. I am subscribed to Justice Leauge and Aquaman from DC and they are starting what might be my favorite story ark yet with "The Throne of Atlantis". As for Marvel, I already said what I subbed to in my other post.

Alrighty, after thinking it over I'm headin' to the local comic shop to get two comics from DC's new 52 they're gonna be Batman and Green Lantern Corps. After that we'll see where it goes from there.

I also enjoy things that are different than the typical superhero comic book. Road to Perdition was really good. I'm mentioned in another post, but Rust is good, too, though it's not finished yet.

Well, almost a month later, I picked up The Green Lantern volume 1 Sinestro, and Batman The Dark Knight.

I finished the Green Lantern one and loved it, so I think it's safe to say I've out grown (or ungrown) out of my dislike for comics, at least as far as Green Lantern goes.

I haven't started the Batman one yet, but I think I'll like it. If I end up running out of money because of yet again another hobby, I'll be sure to blame you people for my lack of self control, because obviously it wouldn't be my fault! Very Happy
